Ken Short Tells it like it is..
Miss Kitty's Story
Miss Kitty and her mother were instantly
homeless after Hurricane Katrina ravaged
through the town of Pearlington, Mississippi.
The had little more than what they carried on
their backs on that fateful day, plus broken
homes on dirt lots.
In the next three plus years, they watched their
homes be cleared of debris and utilities and
slowly rebuilt by PDA volunteers one group at
a time, one week at a time. They remained
active in their local churches, singing in the
choirs like hummingbirds, sharing the Joy of
Jesus with every contact they made.
Mom's home was finished a few months ago
and Kitty's was completed in time for her to
celebrate Christmas in her "new" home for the
first time in three years. The video clip shows
our crew of volunteers carry appliances in Miss
Kitty's home under the cover of darkness to her
surprise when she came home from work the next
day. (The video was shot on our Katrina 7 trip in
November. The home was finished a month later.

Experiences from our mission trip to Pearlington, MS
Just about anyone who has gone on a hurricane relief mission trip will come back with stories and
experiences they are compelled to tell. Often they were ears for the hurricane victims who are still
processing their harrowing experiences, losses and grief to promote healing.
Interaction with the people of Pearlington is part of the magic of these trips. Join our team going to
Mississippi to continue a five-year commitment to rid the area of inadequate housing for hurricane
victims. The volunteers will be working to replace trailers and temporary housing with permanent
homes for families in Pearlington.
You will be greeted with open arms by families who have so patiently dreamed of returning to a
normal life. While in the Gulf, we hammer, roof, wire, drywall, clean paint, install and do other work
to repair the damage. We will also get to know the families and share meals Christian love,
devotions and worship.
You will be joining volunteers from many Southeast Michigan Presbyterian Churches and staying in
a Presbyterian Disaster Assistance camp.
Following are a couple of stories for the Katrina 7 trip last fall:
From the first days after Hurricane Katrina,
Ken Short started his recovery process by
helping rescue neighbors; forming a "militia" in
the absence of any authorities to ward off
looters; becoming an advocate for his
neighbors and helping them start their
rebuilding process.
Mr. Short is an ex-marine and tells it like it is.
This video tells you how he rebuilt his home
with the help of volunteers, often using
materials that were strewn asunder by the wind
and storm surge. He also offers some advice
to those who come to Pearlington.
